SEO201 - Deep Links (Chap 5)

May 3rd, 2007 | 456 Views

The potential link partners to your website easily outnumber the number of links to your home page can accommodate. In such a scene, one option before you can be to let them go and alternatively you can link them to the inside web pages. The latter is termed as “Deep linking”.

To define, Deep Links are just like any ordinary URL, which point at Web Page(s) other than the home page or main page of the other website. The web page(s) linked to can be a photograph, a video or a full text of a journal article or a book online et al.

It may not sound good enough for a bargain, but it is beneficial in many ways. Imagine a shopping based website offering link to home-page every time of information sought for a specific product or service on sale on one of its web pages inside. Of course, the link will only feel burdensome for the visitor who shall have to browse all the way to product or service in question each time upon clicking. Better in this case would be to have a deep link to the web page in the shopping website, pinpointing directly at the product or service of interest. Sporting a deep link for a specific product or service likewise, is a better option for your website than otherwise, as it ensures better user experience.

Next, think about it this way. Deep linking allows you to capture all those quality links that otherwise cannot be accommodated on the home page for lack of space or feasibility. Likewise, it allows you to have a link to your home page on one of the web pages within the quality websites, which is no doubt a better idea than letting them go altogether. After all, each link counts as a positive vote in your favor, especially when coming for a good quality website.

Deep linking when done strategically enriches your website’s keyword optimization manifolds. For example, when your website sports a link to a related picture or text from an electronic publication so as to exemplify the content already given, what is imperatively similar are keywords. Further keyword optimization means search engine finds you more relevant to the subject of search and higher rank. This is as good when linking is reciprocal or inbound - after all, both parties share common keywords in case of strategic deep linking.

The fundamental purpose of deep links for any author or a web master is to secure direct link to a specific piece of text or picture or diagram et al for ready future reference. Not only does the direct (deep) link saves the visitor from getting lost in the sea of content based on his specific keywords, but also renders the websites in question more informative and rich in content as they connect to each other based on common keywords.
