SEO101 - SEO Defined (Chap 2)

Search Engine Optimization is all about giving your website a proper display in the Search Engine Result Page (SERP). Though the process involved in SEO is simple, the effort of achieving a proper SEO for a website is quite difficult.

SEO involves the basic strategy of identifying the website with the most appropriate keyword/phrase. Thus, it is simply the keyword used in your website that determines the position of your website in the SERP. However, this process is not very easy. Suppose you own a website that runs an online shop of a variety of items, say a variety of antique items. There are thousands of websites that do the same business, and there are millions of users who search the relevant websites using infinite number of possible keywords. How will you make sure that your website will get a decent position in the SERP?

The only solution to counter this situation is to choose the best keywords possible. Concentrate on the best aspects of your business. Conduct a series of search attempts by using those keywords in the prominent search engine tools. Review the result on the basis of the links that are directed by them. If the SERP contains potential websites, those similar to yours, in its priority listing, then you may finalize those keywords as potential leads of your website.

Related keyword is another concept that has to be given the next priority. These are the secondary keywords/ alternate keywords that a potential customer may use in order to get the relevant information from a website. For example, ‘online antique sale’ may be the primary key phrase for the above website. In this particular case, you may use words such as ‘old-fashioned’, ‘historic’, ‘archeological’, etc., as secondary keywords. You may also use the rearranged primary key phrases or additional words to form the secondary keywords. For example, you may restructure your primary key phrase to ‘antiques sale online’ or ‘best antiques on sale’ etc., to retain the importance of the main word ‘antique’.

The last thing about SEO is implementing the keyword in your website appropriately. Now you know the importance of the contents of your website. Even if you have a very less textual content in your website, it should be written in SEO-savvy format. It simply means that your website contents should contain about 5-20% of the primary keyword. Having less keyword contents reduces the chances of being optimized by the search engine. On the other hand, if the frequency of the keyword is more than 20%, there are chances that the website be labeled as ’spammed’ and may get ignored by the search engines.

The position of the keywords is also another important aspect of SEO. The thumb rule is that the keyword that is positioned in the first line of the page and the paragraphs get better optimization than those placed in the middle or lower position. Using certain format styles, such as bold and italics, will also help to improve the optimization.

And lastly, SEO involves another tedious process, i.e., following the performance of your website once it is submitted to the search engine. As mentioned earlier, you may verify the result of your effort by doing a search as mentioned earlier.
